An essential primer on capitalism, politics and how the world works, based on the hugely popular undergraduate lecture series 'What is Politics?'

Is there an alternative to capitalism? In this landmark text Chomsky and Waterstone chart a critical map for a more just and sustainable society.

'Covid-19 has revealed glaring failures and monstrous brutalities in the current capitalist system. It represents both a crisis and an opportunity. Everything depends on the actions that people take into their own hands.'

How does politics shape our world, our lives and our perceptions? How much of 'common sense' is actually driven by the ruling classes' needs and interests? And how are we to challenge the capitalist structures that now threaten all life on the planet?

Consequences of Capitalism exposes the deep, often unseen connections between neoliberal 'common sense' and structural power. In making these linkages, we see how the current hegemony keeps social justice movements divided and marginalized. And, most importantly, we see how we can fight to overcome these divisions.

Review
Noam Chomsky is indispensable. Just as it is impossible to imagine appreciating the dramatic arts without learning Shakespeare, or loving jazz trumpet without an appreciation of Louis Armstrong, it is inconceivable that one might study contemporary political thought without reading Chomsky ― Los Angeles Review of Books

As you would expect from Chomsky a rather erudite and interesting read. It is able to present the complexities of our age in a digestible fashion . The book is basically lectures given by Chomsky and Waterstone on various topics such as: capitalism and militarism; capitalism and environment. Well researched, topical and thought provoking. As lectures they flow more easily than a formal piece of literature. Content is sometimes quite astounding and it is presented in such a way that even a person with a casual interest in the area would be able to access the details and understand the issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carefully prepared lectures. A substantial, valuable contribution.Reviewed in the United States on 17 June 2024

- I skimmed the Waterstone’s but carefully read all the Chomsky lectures. For those familiar with Chomsky there’s not a lot of new information here. However, it is a first rate updating and compilation of major Chomsky themes. These carefully prepared lectures are a substantial and valuable contribution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing, how few are interested in at least letting another perspective inform them.Reviewed in Germany on 6 April 2022

It‘s almost Iike a fear of existing information and it‘s interpretation, that might show one, that there are alternatives. The common sense at work. Still, what harm does a little and save excursion into another perspective do by reading a book. So: read it. Just for the sake of getting another view. You can always go back to what you know and believe now. Or can you?

5.0 out of 5 stars For strong stomachs!Reviewed in Italy on 12 June 2021

A double analysis of the consequences of capitalism: inequality, militarism, colonialism, imperialism and ecological disaster.
Wonderfully clear is the explanation of the origins and causes of neoliberalism born from the imbalances of the early 1970s, and the description of the genesis of Keynesian capitalism is equally illuminating and controlled from the post-World War II period.
Since this is the transcription of some lessons held by the two authors, the form is extremely direct and the raw content, especially with reference to American foreign policy, is re-read in the light of the militarism and rhetoric of the dangerous enemy.
Challenging but indispensable reading for those who want to try to deepen the story and go beyond the explanations of common sense.
