I guess that this bunch of totally ignorant politicos in the Congress lump together as “socialism” just everything they don’t like. Every extra cent in taxes is socialism. Any attempt to cut or limit college tuition is socialism. Any movement towards socialised medical care is socialism. And any socialism is hell. So simple, just like Evangelical hellfire preaching. And, as any outburst of ideological or religious fanaticism, this Congressional “condemnation of socialism” is full of bad history - extremely unprofessional way of handling historical events. These Stalinist policies, for example, that really merit condemnation (GULAG etc.) had nothing to do with any socialism, however defined. And these post-revolutionary Soviet policies that were really socialist (free medicine, gender equality etc) are nothing worth condemning - many of them were soon copied, with some modifications, in pro-American Western and Northern Europe of Cold War age, to be sure…
